Microsoft open policy faces scrutiny

There’s one reason, according to Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft‘s deputy general counsel and vice president of intellectual property and licensing, that the company began opening up to the rest of the software industry following the U.S. antitrust case. “We set out to start opening doors and mending fences with a number of key industry partners,” Gutierrez said in an interview. That desire to make peace was the spark that, combined with some other factors like enterprise use of multiple vendors, ultimately led to the cross-licensing deal with Novell and the launch of Microsoft’s interoperability principles earlier this year, he said. The principles describe a greater commitment by Microsoft to support industry standards, promote data portability and open up connections for interoperability with other software. The company initially published more than 30,000 pages of documentation for Windows client and server protocols that were previously only available for license.

Ballmer scrambles for cover in egg attack

Top Vole Steve Ballmer was shelled by an egg-wielder when he spoke at Budapest’s Corvinus University on Monday. The shy and retiring Microsoft CEO had just started to speak when a man stood up and started shouting “Give back the money of the taxpayers!”. It was unclear if he was a representative of the local Inland Revenue, but he hurled three eggs at Ballmer who chickened out and ducked for cover. The first egg hit the white board and Ballmer hid behind a desk as two more eggs were thrown. The man, who had a placard, which said “Microsoft equals Corruption”, left the room under an escort. Ballmer was apparently speechless for at least two seconds after the attack and then carried on in his normal shy way

Google execs stew over Microsoft response

Google’s top brass are meeting Monday to figure out a response to how Microsoft’s new overtures toward Yahoo affect Google’s potential ad deal with Yahoo. Google and Yahoo have been discussing a partnership under which Google would supply some text ads alongside Yahoo search results; both companies expressed satisfaction with a limited two-week test. However, an announcement of the partnership between the online rivals has been delayed more than once. Google’s top executives have said they’d like to offer Yahoo a helping hand in their travails to fend off Microsoft, then activist shareholder Carl Icahn, and now Microsoft again.

Google Search To be larger than Microsoft Windows in 2009

Why is Microsoft so concerned about Google? Lots of reasons, one of which is this: By this time next year, Google’s search business (not including Adsense) will be larger and more profitable than the most profitable and legendary monopoly in history – Microsoft Windows. Both products are natural monopolies. Google’s share of the search market should continue to approach Microsoft’s share of the operating system market (90%+) Both products are wildly, fantastically profitable. Microsoft’s Windows business has operating margins of >75%. So does Google’s search business (once you factor out the billions Google is spending on products that produce zero revenue).

Microsoft launches space tours on the Web

Microsoft on Monday launched its WorldWide Telescope, a free Web-based program that allows users to explore galaxies, star systems, and distant planets. The program, which was developed by Microsoft’s research arm, marries together images from the Hubble Space Telescope, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory Center and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey among others. The program is similar to Google Sky, a mode of Google Earth that offers views of the universe, including high-resolution photographs from the Hubble Space Telescope and background information on discoveries and constellations. Microsoft said WorldWide Telescope will be made available for free as a tribute to Jim Gray, a Microsoft researcher who disappeared off the California coast while sailing last year.

Gates Says Microsoft Will Pursue ‘Independent Path’ After Failed Bid

TOKYO — Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates said Wednesday the company isn’t pursuing other deals following its withdrawal of its $47.5 billion takeover bid for Yahoo Inc. Separately, Mr. Gates was also upbeat on the troubled Vista operating system. Speaking at a news conference here, Mr. Gates said the company put “a lot of effort” in the talks with Yahoo and has decided they should pursue “independent paths”. Over the weekend, Microsoft withdrew its three-month-old unsolicited bid for Yahoo after seeing the impasse with Yahoo’s board over a mutually acceptable sales price.

Microsoft – now who else can we acquire?

You know what they say – never assume anything! At the outside Microsoft could be playing out some well thought out double-cross. If it’s not, then Microsoft could now be looking at other possible acquisitions. They have billions of unspent dollars, what are they going to do with them. Eric Lai of Computerworld suggests there could be three companies to look out for. The most logical possible acquisition would be AOL because of its advertising network and other recent gains. Then there’s LinkedIn, a professional networking site with zillions of members, and the web advertising sit ValueClick. Watch this space.

Microsoft builds hard drive scanner for police

Microsoft has built a USB thumb drive for the police that scans computer hard drives.The Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor can be used in police raids to map hard drives and decrypt passwords without shutting the computer down and losing evidence. The device was shown off at a three-day security conference for 350 law enforcement officials in Redmond, Washington. “These are things in which we invest substantial resources, but not from the perspective of making money,” Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith told the Seattle Times. “We’re doing this to help ensure that the internet stays safe.”

The thumb drive has 150 commands and can log hard drive activity, check on surfing history and decrypt some passwords. Microsoft has distributed the device for free since last year, and claims that it is in use by over 2,000 officers in 15 countries. However, Smith acknowledged that there is a financial upside for Microsoft in giving away the device, since it makes money selling ancillary software and services. Microsoft has been holding law enforcement meetings since 2006 in an effort to educate police about cyber-crime.

Windows Vista SP1 available to the public

Microsoft has begun distributing Windows Vista Service Pack 1 as an automatic update, a move which will allow users who have not already downloaded the service pack to obtain it automatically. The service pack pledges improved performance and stability, along with a cumulative security update. A spokesman for Microsoft stated that the update was being distributed in several smaller downloads. Users should wait until all the packages have been downloaded before expecting it to run. Vista SP1 update was released to PC manufacturers in early February, and was made available as a voluntary download in March.

Microsoft Unveils list of proposed Yahoo Directors for Proxy Fight

In spite of earlier implying in Milan yesterday that Microsoft would walk away from the Yahoo deal, later the same day, Microsoft, keeping its options open, leaked many of the names on the slate of directors it plans to file if instead it goes forward with a proxy fight. The list has 10 nominees and three alternates, says the Wall Street Journal. The nominees include:

John Chapple, former Nextel Partners Inc. CEO
Edward Meyer, former Grey Global Group Inc. CEO
Jaynie Studenmund, former chief operating officer of Overture Services
Vanessa Wittman, Adelphia Communications Corp. CFO

The nominees will probably have a short stay in which they do one thing, vote to merge with Microsoft.
